For Mortal Kombat 11, Technicolor Animation & Games Mixes It Up to Keep Super Heroic Actions Grounded in Realism.

Technicolor Animation & Games put their combined artistic and technical experience to the test for Mortal Kombat 11, which called for super heroic actions mixed with realism in a Gameplay environment. With Mortal Kombat 11, the iconic fighting video game franchise continues its epic saga with a new cinematic, time-bending narrative as players take on the role of favorite characters past and present. The latest gameplay offers near infinite character customization options, giving players greater control and a more personalized experience than ever, as they choose from a roster of fighters with unique abilities and Fatalities.

For Technicolor Animation & Games, this was the first opportunity to be a part of the Mortal Kombat series from NetherRealm Studios. The Technicolor Animation & Games leadership team met with the MK11 crew at their studio and spent considerable time syncing up on expectations, knowing that the developer keeps the fans top-of-mind in never compromising on any element of the user experience.

With motion captured data as their starting point, Technicolor animators worked tirelessly to keep the Mortal Kombat style intact. The enhancements and timings on hits and Combo attacks had to be spot-on.

“The real challenge was making the Combos work without losing their grace, or the brutal feel of the well-choreographed action sequences,” said Animation Lead Guru Kochukrishnan. “Attack animations required micro-minute finesse, and each character had a different type of Fatality associated with them, similar only in terms of brutality. This is the type of project where artistic and technical skills are equally tested.”

Running on the Unreal Engine, Mortal Kombat 11 is being released for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One – by publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
